AbstractOur Solar System is by far the only planetary system that can be studied up close and in great detail. Apart from the Sun, eight major planets and their satellite systems, our Solar System contains millions of small bodies that are remnants from the era of planetary formation. These bodies scatter across the Solar System from regions interior of Mercury's orbit to the trans-Neptunian region and beyond, exhibiting great diversity in terms of their origin, evolution, physical and dynamical states. The rise of time-domain astronomy has led to many new discoveries in small body research that often benefit from data not originally designed for such research. Here I will talk about the recent progress in small body research achieved using data from synoptic sky surveys such as the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). I will conclude with a discussion on how our understanding of the Solar System may benefit from next generation sky surveys such as the upcoming Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) and Earth 2.0 (ET) survey.

Bio: Quanzhi Ye is currently an Assistant Research Scientist at the University of Maryland. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, focused on the interrelation between meteor showers, comets and asteroids, and then completed his postdoctoral research at California Institute of Technology, working on Solar System observations using Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) and Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF). He is primarily interested in the formation and evolution of small bodies in the Solar System.
