Abstract
The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) celebrated in October 2009 its 30th birthday. In spite of its age and the relatively modest size of its 3.6-m mirror, CFHT is a major player in today’s astronomy, thanks to an excellent site, a unique suite of instruments, and exemplary operations. The status of the Observatory, its instrumentation and its observing modes will be described, with some highlights on its recent scientific achievements.
CFHT is now looking ahead to its fourth decade of operation. Unique and state of the art new instruments under study or already in the making, as well as exciting facility improvements, will maintain CFHT at the forefront of astronomy for this decade. There are also exciting possibilities for new developments beyond 2020. While entering this Decade 4 era, CFHT is offering opportunities for collaborations at various levels, allowing the opening of CFHT observing time to a new community, the shared development of new instrumentation, or potentially offering the possibility of acquiring a share in the CFHT Corporation. All these projects and associated opportunities will be described in detail as a preamble to a fruitful question and answer session.
