Invited by National Astronomical Observatory of China (NAOC), Dr. Christian Veillet, the executive director of Canada – Fance – Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) made an academic visit to China from April 5 to April 13. During his stay in China, Dr. Veillet visited Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) between April 11 and 13.
CFHT is built in Hawaii, USA, which is one of the best sites for astronomical observations in the world. In a ten years’ plan from 2010 to 2020, CFHT will start a sequence of detailed and operational instrument developing plan, to keep the competition of CFHT in the frontier of scientific research. CFHT provides research basis for projects of international Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) and Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) of USA.
During his visite in SHAO, Dr. Veillet introduced the work and terminal equipments of CFHT, recent progress of sky survey and next 10 years’ plan. He also discussed with related researchers of Shanghai Astronomical Observatory and technical experts and staffs of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Accompanied by Prof. Zhengyi Shao, the Head of 1.56m Optical Telescope Base, Dr. Christian Veillet visited Sheshan Observational Base of SHAO on the afternoon of Apr. 12.
Dr. Christian Veillet also met one of his old friends, Prof. Wenjing Jin of Shanghai Astronomical Observatory.
