Abstract:
I will use N-body simulations to follow the formation and evolution of Milky-Way type galaxies in the framework of a scenario starting with the merging of two protogalaxies, each with a hot gaseous halo. Various components -- the thin and the thick disc, the classical bulge, the bar(s), the spirals, etc -- form and their properties reproduce well those observed. Examining the bar/bulge region, I find close links between kinematics and metallicity for the various populations, as found in our Galaxy. The radial surface density profiles of the disc reproduce the three types observed and evolve with redshift as observed. Such simulations can be very useful to help us understand the evolutionary mechanisms at play.
