Current and Future Capabilities of the VLBA
Abstract:
The Very Long Baseline Array is a dedicated VLBI array consisting of ten 25 meter antennas and a correlator center. With baseline lengths ranging from 240 to 8600 km and a frequency range of 300MHz to 90 GHz the VLBA is an ideal instrument for ultra high angular resolution studies of active galaxies, pulsars, astrophysical masers and other extreme objects. Astrometry with the VLBA allows accurate distance measurements across much of the Galaxy and is being used to deepen our knowledge of star forming regions and map in detail the shape and size of the Milky Way and the velocities of its neighbors. Several important upgrades to the VLBA are being completed which will allow higher sensitivity and better improved tuning frequency coverage. Some possible future upgrades will be discussed as well.
